Martin Whitmarsh claims McLaren were the fastest at Monza – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has recently claimed that his team had the fastest car at Monza this past weekend for the 2011 Italian Grand Prix.
He said the team was looking very good throughout the weekend but they still failed to defeat or even challenge Sebastian Vettel for the victory.
“Our cars were the quickest of the lot. Lewis posted fastest lap, while Jenson took second-fastest lap - but unfortunately our drivers didn't get off to good enough starts,” he said.
Since Lewis Hamilton started from 2nd place on the grid, Whitmarsh was quite frustrated with how his team performed. Both Hamilton and Jenson Button ended up in 4th and 7th places
respectively after the race restarted as a result of a crash and safety car.
However, the 2009 Formula 1 world champion got himself up in 2nd place before the race end and finished around 10 seconds behind Vettel’s RB7.
“Meanwhile, Seb [Vettel] was able to pull away, which was deeply frustrating for us because we knew we had the pace to take the race to him, had our guys got off to better starts. But that's motor racing: you've got to qualify well, start well and race well,”
said Whitmarsh.
He was challenged by Fernando Alonso throughout the race and since Mark Webber retired out of the race, it seems that the championship is now pretty much over as Vettel is over 100 points ahead of all of his rivals.
Either way, McLaren are out of both drivers’ and constructors’ run now as there are just 6 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season. RBR are way ahead in terms of points as a result of which the rest of the races are not going to affect the fate of the championship
anymore unless they make some huge blunders at the upcoming races.
The next upcoming race is scheduled to take place at Singapore now since this was the final European race of the 2011 Formula 1 season and now the Asian phase of the season will begin once again.
