Martin Whitmarsh confident that McLaren can claim the championship title – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they are confidently looking forward to win the 2012 Formula 1 world championship title after claiming two grands prix victories in the season so far.
McLaren driver, Lewis Hamilton performed tremendously well in the Canadian GP held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10 and took his first victory of this season.
Furthermore, his strategy to take two pit stops proved successful in the end when he left behind the defending champion, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing and the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
At present, he is leading the drivers’ championship with 88 points and is 2 points ahead of Alonso who has a lead of just 1 point over Vettel.
On the other hand, his teammate, Jenson Button took an incredible victory in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia after setting off from second grid position and became the first race winner of the season.
However, the 2009 world champion has been seen struggling with the tyre management and the car’s setup due to which he could only score 2 points in the last four races.
Nonetheless, he has asserted that he is all set to strike back to perform well in the European GP which is to be held at Valencia Street Circuit in Spain on June 24.
Meanwhile, Whitmarsh has also expressed that they are trying their best to make the essential developments and the necessary preparations for the approaching races so as to improve the pace of their car to fight for this year’s championship title.
“Given that the delta between ourselves, Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG and Red Bull Racing is so narrow, we'll once again be pushing hard on both our operational and technical fronts to ensure we stay at the front,” said Whitmarsh. “As always, we aim to bring at
least an additional one-tenth [of a second] laptime benefit to each race, and we're pushing hard to ensure we can over-deliver on that on as regular a basis as possible. It may sound like a negligible increment, but it could prove to be the difference between
winning and losing the world championship.”
