Martin Whitmarsh confirms McLaren will remain with Mercedes – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed that they intend to run Mercedes-powered engines in the coming years.
The Woking based team has faced many reliability issues in the season until now due to which their driver, Lewis Hamilton lost some crucial points in the championship fight and his hopes to claim the title eventually faded.
On the other hand, Hamilton’s teammate Jenson Button has also faced some technical problems and tyres management issues in the season so far.
However, Whitmarsh has said that the ongoing problems have nothing to do with the overall system of the team and they have full faith in their engine provider, Mercedes.
Moreover, he said that they are going to remain with the Silver Arrows for the foreseeable future. He also said that they have a very good relationship with them and are looking forward to develop more profound affiliation in the coming years.
“It is going to be McLaren Mercedes for quite a few years to come,” Whitmarsh told the the Daily Mail. “It is a good partnership and it works well. We've been together for 18 years and it is going to continue for quite a few years to come.”
In addition, he said that he has always enjoyed his association with the German engine manufacturer and they are pleased to be a part of Mercedes family.
“I think we have got a very good deal with them, but I think more importantly than that is we have got a good partnership. Obviously I've been involved with Mercedes personally. I ran the engine side so we know the people, and we are proud to be part of
the Mercedes-Benz family,” he added.
At present, the British squad is standing at third place in the constructors’ championship. Besides, they are ahead of their main rival, Lotus and are behind Ferrari.
Meanwhile, the 2008 world champion is at fifth place in the drivers’ rankings. Additionally, he is behind his major opponent, Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and is ahead of Button.
It will be interesting to see how they perform in the remaining two grands prix of the ongoing season.
