Martin Whitmarsh defends Lewis Hamilton regarding his crash record – Formula 1 news
Martin Whitmarsh, the team principal of McLaren has recently defended Lewis Hamilton’s “crash record” which is by far one of the most “vast” records of them all in Formula 1 despite the fact that Hamilton has been a part of the sport since almost 4 years
now.
“I think Lewis Hamilton makes Formula One a more exciting place to be, so we should all hope that Lewis continues to be one of the most exciting racing drivers that any of us have seen. I don't want him to change, I've spoken to Lewis out of the car and
I think he's had some disappointments recently and I think the new Lewis has dealt with those very well,” he said.
The 2008 Formula 1 world champion’s latest crash of them all was at this past weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix where he crashed out of the race and ruined his chances of competing for the drivers’ title completely.
“My opinion is that Lewis was extremely unlucky. I think he gave some space, you can always say why didn't he give more, but he gave some space,” said Whitmarsh.
On the other hand, Jenson Button has not been able to score consistent good results since he joined the team and Hamilton crashes a lot as a result of which he does not score good consistent results either and loses his points’ advantage at a certain point.
That is the main reason why Red Bull Racing took the lead this year and that is the main reason why McLaren have not been able to win a single title since the past 3 years now despite the fact that they do have a very competitive car.
At the Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton qualified in 2nd place and if he had finished in a strong position and drove safely throughout the race, he could have stayed in the championship or even won the race since Formula 1 is not all
about aggression.
