Martin Whitmarsh does not expect to see over-taking miracles in 2011
McLaren team boss, Martin Whitmarsh believes that the new updates in Formula 1 for the upcoming season will make the sport more exciting than ever before. FIA has announced to introduce the new adjustable rear wings and has also brought the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) back on the track for 2011 season. Both these changes are expected to bring more overtaking moves this season.
While talking about the changes earlier today, he explained that one must not expect to see overtaking ‘miracles’ on the track. He explained saying that over-taking on the track is mostly witnessed when the driver in the front makes a mistake, giving the driver behind him an opportunity to move forward. However, he added that in Formula 1, it is very rare that any driver makes a mistake on the track.
Racing is all about passion and drama on the track and overtaking gives the best entertainment to the race lovers. However, the past few years have seen very few such moves on the Formula One tracks. Therefore, FIA has brought these new changes to bring more spark and exhilaration on the race weekends.
McLaren team boss Whitmarsh believes that the best thing about the new wing design is that they could be altered at any part of the season. He explained saying that if a team realises that it is not getting the desired results it can always make alterations in the structure of its wing.
The Briton stated, "I think what we have done now is give ourselves a tool - and between the teams and the FIA we have responded to it. If it was an absolute disaster, which I don't think it will be, then frankly to delete the use of that item or modify its mode of operation, is very easy to do. If you got into this season and suddenly said: with these cars there isn't any overtaking, and it was perceived as a big public need, then we have more of a tool to address it.”
He further added that since there will be a variety of KERS users on the track, none of the team or drivers are going to have an evident advantage. However, he believes that every team will have its own kind of system, and above all, the combined effect of the wings and KERS can together give more boost to one team than the other.
He concluded saying, "Or, you will have an attack that is a combination of KERS plus stalled rear wing. I don't think you can predict it. We have just got to make sure we find a way to use it sensibly."
