Martin Whitmarsh eyeing to challenge Red Bull in China: Formula 1 Update
McLaren’s CEO, Martin Whitmarsh, has claimed that his team would bring some upgrades for the next Formula 1 race of the 2011 season, at Shanghai in China. The British team is the closest to the rivals, Red Bull, in terms of speed and reliability. However,
the reigning champions have edged them in the first two races of the season.
Whitmarsh stated, “We've got some things that we will try on Friday and that is the nature of this sport. It is my job to keep pushing and improving the car, which we will try and do. We have some interesting work to do on the Friday in China, but not much
time. We will do the best we can there.”
The McLaren boss further added, “If you look at the progress we have made in the last four or five weeks we are heading in the right direction, but we will need to keep going if we are going to be competitive, win races and compete for the championship this
year.”
The British team tried its new floor and exhaust system during the practice sessions of the Malaysian Grand Prix. However, the team didn’t want to risk the reliability of the car due to which they opted against making the changes. McLaren will yet again
test the upgrades during practice sessions at Shanghai, which will take place on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 April.
The Vodafone sponsored team was unable to perform consistently during the winter testing and they were far behind Ferrari and Red Bull. However, the start to the season proved to be promising for the team, as they posted a serious challenge to the reigning
champions in the Australian Grand Prix.
Coming to the Malaysian GP, McLaren got stronger and gave a tough time to the Red Bull drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, both during qualifying and the race day.
The qualifiers proved to be impressive for the British team, but Vettel just got ahead in the last moments of the session. The race was also dominated by the young German, but he was unable to win it by such a huge margin, as he did in the inaugural race
of the season.
