Martin Whitmarsh hails Jenson Button’s Canadian Grand Prix performance – Formula 1 news
McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that Jenson Button’s victory in the Canadian Grand Prix was one of the best wins in the history of Formula 1.
He also mentioned that Button’s performance in the Montreal race weekend was incredible and fantastic, as he snatched the position from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in the last lap of the race.
Whitmarsh added that the team driver put all his efforts during the closing laps and finally won a race for the first time in the 2011 season.
Button kicked off to a bad start to the Canadian Grand Prix. He was involved in a collision with his teammate Lewis Hamilton when the race began and then he suffered a drive-through penalty for over speeding during the safety car period. He lost a lot of
his lap time in these cases and due to that, he found himself in the 21st place before the restart of the race.
After a long red flag due to a heavy downpour, Button restarted his race from the end of the grid and struggled for a strong finish.
The team principal discussed the race and said, “There were punctures, he had to change the front wing, and from 21st I don't know how many times he had to overtake people. He just drove fantastically well. He kept focused. He applied as much pressure as
he had to get past and really did a fantastic job. This was 90 per cent him and 10 per cent the car.”
The 2009 world champion took five pitstops in the Montreal Grand Prix. However, the 31-year-old driver mentioned that despite having several issues during the race he wanted to win it. He further added that he is looking forward to win another world championship.
He added, “If I didn't win another Championship I wouldn't leave Formula One and feel I had missed out, that I hadn't achieved what I wanted to. But, at this moment in time, I would love to fight for another Championship.”
After achieving a race victory in Canada, Button is looking to win further races in the season in order to win this year’s title.
