McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh hopes that Lewis Hamilton will continue to stay at his current team after 2012 Formula 1 season.
Hamilton’s contract with the Woking based team is going to end at the conclusion of this season. Meanwhile, there have been a lot of speculations that the British driver may join another team after this year. However, Whitmarsh has recently expressed that
they expect the 2008 world champion to stay even beyond the expiry of his contract.
“There's much more speculation outside of the team than inside team,” he said. “I think we're focused on winning races and winning a championship. I think it's very clear that we enjoy working with Lewis. I think Lewis enjoys being in this team. So we have
full expectation of that continuing.”
In addition, he said that although Hamilton struggled with the poor pit stop strategy in couple of races however, he asserted that now the Briton is very happy with the team as they have made some significant improvements in their operations. Moreover, he
said that their main target is to claim the championship title.
“He's going to have many years ahead of him. He's going to have many great wins ahead of him. That's what he's trying to do; we're working with him and there's a really good relationship at the moment. The main goal for all of us is to win this year's championship,”
he said.
At present, Hamilton is leading the drivers’ championship with 88 points after winning the Canadian Grand Prix held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10. Besides, he is 2 points ahead of the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who has a lead
of just 1 point over the defending champion, Sebastian Vettel.
On the other hand, McLaren are currently standing at second place in the constructors’ championship with 133 points. Additionally, they are 31 points behind Red Bull Racing and 25 points ahead of Lotus.
Furthermore, they are trying their best to make the substantial preparations so as to improve the pace of their car for the forthcoming races.
Above and beyond, they are surely one of the most competitive contenders in this year’s championship fight with the perfect blend of expertise and talent.
