Martin Whitmarsh insists McLaren need to make a lot more progress – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they need to make a lot more progress in order to compete well with their opponents in the season ahead.
The Woking based squad had quite a struggling pre-season testing programme this year and their drivers, Jenson Button and Sergio Perez have not been able to attain competitive results with consistency as compared to their rivals.
Button’s best performance was his fifth place finish which he secured in the Chinese Grand Prix. On the other hand, Perez secured sixth place finish in the Bahrain GP which is his best performance in the season until now. However, both the drivers have faced
a lot of difficulties with their qualifying and race pace.
Whitmarsh has said that although they have made some considerable progress over the last two races, but insisted that they still need to make some more developments in their car to make their position stronger in this year’s championship.
“It was a little bit stronger but we are still not there,” he said. “Yes, we've made a little bit of progress but we shouldn't get carried away. Our drivers did a great job of racing [in Bahrain] and the team did a reasonable job but the car is not quick
enough at the moment. We've made some progress but we need to make a lot more.”
Furthermore, he said that the British driver faced tyre degradation issue in the last race due to which he could only score one point. Besides, he asserted that the hotter track conditions in Bahrain didn’t provide any help to their drivers.
“Certainly Jenson wouldn't say that, he was struggling with his tyres. With Jenson I was a little bit surprised, but sometimes you just get a set of tyres and they just don't [work as expected],” he added.
Besides, he said that he is really happy to see the Mexican driver on sixth position in the fourth round and they want him to keep on improving his performance to score good points with consistency in the season ahead.
Let’s see whether the British team will be able to make desired progress or not.
