Martin Whitmarsh insists McLaren need to score more points in 2013 – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they need to make sure that they score points with greater consistency in the 2013 Formula 1 season and insisted that they should work hard to make their car more reliable.
Lewis Hamilton of the Woking based team had been deemed as one of the most competitive title contenders in this year’s championship fight.
Moreover, he scored points with admirable consistency in the season, but faced many reliability issues due to which he lost some crucial points and could not challenge his main rivals, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel
of Red Bull Racing in the championship battle.
On the other hand, his teammate, Jenson Button also faced some technical and tyre management issues which hindered his performances in many races.
Even though, the British team had one of the most successful pre-season testing programmes this year, but they failed to resolve their reliability problems as a result of which they struggled in quite a few grands prix.
Nevertheless, Whitmarsh has said that they are learning from their mistakes and are looking forward to make the necessary developments to ensure their car’s reliability in the next season to attain better results.
“It wasn't how we wanted to end but I think we've had a good competitive car for the last part of this season,” Whitmarsh said. “That means we've just got to make sure we can do that for the beginning of next year. I think we've had a quick car for a lot
of this year but we've got to make sure we're really taking the points when they're there to be taken.”
In addition, he said that although they could only win seven races in this season, nevertheless, they are not feeling upset and are confidently targeting to achieve more in the coming year.
“Too many have slipped through our fingers this year which is frustrating, but we come away with seven great victories,” he added.
It will be very interesting to see how McLaren show up in the next season with Button and his new teammate, Sergio Perez.
