Martin Whitmarsh of McLaren says he will not stand for re-election as FOTA chairman – Formula 1 news
Martin Whitmarsh, team principal of McLaren has revealed that he will not be taking part in the re-elections of Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) chairmanship.
He said that he has been performing his duties since three years and now he believes that someone else should have the opportunity to hold the position and carry on with the duties.
Furthermore, he said that the selection of chairman of FOTA depends on the decision of teams. He only cares about Formula 1 it does not depend on the role he owns.
Whitmarsh told Autosport.com, “I think it's probably healthy, I suppose it's three years or whatever, I think it would be quite healthy for someone else to do it now. I think it's for the teams to decide on that. I care about Formula 1, whatever role I'm
in. McLaren, I think, has been an extraordinarily good citizen, in my opinion, of the sport.”
Furthermore, the principal of team McLaren said that the purpose of FOTA is to understand the problems and issues of all the players. He added that whatever happens they will keep trying to fulfil the purpose of its existence.
“We [FOTA] have tried to be a galvanising, stabilising force, trying to understand the issues of all the players. Whatever happens, we'll continue to try and do those things,” he added.
Whitmarsh said that still there are a plenty of races left in the current 2012 season, therefore it will be too early to say who will be taking charge in his place.
Whitmarsh joined FOTA in 2009 and during this period, Red Bull, Ferrari, Toro Rosso and Sauber have left the association.
Commenting on the option of Ross Brawn or Eric Boullier chairman in his place, Whitmarsh said that he will support any one of them.
Whitmarsh’s McLaren is currently holding the second place in the Constructors’ Championship with 193 points. It is following a close competition from Lotus with just a difference of one point.
