Martin Whitmarsh praises Fernando Alonso’s performance in 2012 – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has praised the performance of Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso who is currently leading the 2012 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship.
Alonso has performed exceptionally well in the season so far even with the car which is not competent enough as compared to the other contenders. Therefore, he has earned a great respect, not only in the eyes of his fans but has also been admired by his
rivals.
The two-time world champion is presently at the top of drivers’ standings with 194 points and has been the most consistent point scorer in the season until now. Moreover, he has a strong lead over his major opponents which include Sebastian Vettel of Red
Bull Racing, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
Whitmarsh has said that he is really impressed by the Spaniard who has performed incredibly well in the season so far and expressed that the 31-year-old has got some amazing driving talent. Furthermore, he said that Alonso is surely one of the toughest competitors
in this year’s championship fight who has shown tremendous pace even behind the wheel of an incompetent car.
“I think his biggest advantage is lots of natural talent and he's a super keen competitor,” the McLaren team principal told F1Pulse.com exclusively. “His biggest advantage is that he's a very, very tough competitor. He's hard to beat even if he's not in
the most competitive car.”
In addition, he said that the driver of the Scarlet team has scored points with such an impressive consistency that he has made his position very strong in the championship battle.
“He takes points and that's what you should do when you are trying to win the world championship,” Whitmarsh said. “I think he's done a great job so far this year.
Nevertheless, he said that they are confidently looking forward to close the gap to the driver in the front and it will be interesting to see how they show up in the remainder of the season.
“Hopefully we can hunt him down a little bit in the coming races and snatch it away from him. That's the idea anyway,” he added.
