Martin Whitmarsh says 2012 F1 Championship is fully open – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh says that the F1 championship is fully open for the potential contenders after the astounding victory of the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso at 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix held at Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
Despite the amazing win in the difficult conditions at the second race which has given the Scarlet team 5 points lead in the championship, Alonso has declared that they will not lose control as there was still plenty of work to do in order to improve their
performance on normal conditions.
However, Alonso said that they were happy with their surprising victory and would try their best to make the substantial developments and essential preparations for the races ahead.
Whitmarsh said that the championship is open for every competent team while he said that they needed to continue the development of their car to improve their performance.
“The championship is wide open. We are in a reasonable position to win more races and the championship, but that requires us to perform well, not make mistakes and continue to develop car at a decent rate,” said Whitmarsh.
Moreover, it is likely that Ferrari may test F2012 after making the upgrades at Mugello test, to be held in May.
Furthermore, when being asked about Ferrari’s expected improvements by the Spanish GP, Whitmarsh said, “You always do. When trying to win the championship you are always worried, and you hope you can deliver a little bit more performance. If you are honest
about it, at the back of your mind you worry that someone may turn up having had a Eureka moment and might overhaul you.”
It would be interesting to know that Ferrari’s team principal, Stefano Domenicali had expressed that McLaren and Red Bull Racing were not the only rivals in the fight for this year’s championship title.
In addition, Whitmarsh said that there was a long season ahead in which it was impossible to make projections.
Nevertheless, he said that they were in a good form. However, he accepted that nothing could be taken for granted and no one could feel confident to claim the title until the season itself opens out.
