Martin Whitmarsh says Lewis Hamilton will receive full support from McLaren – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they will provide full support to their driver, Lewis Hamilton in the remainder of the 2012 season despite the fact that he is going to leave the team after this year.
Hamilton’s agreement with the Woking based team will be expired at the end of this season and instead of renewing his contract with his current team, he has recently announced that he is moving to Mercedes in the next season. Moreover, he will drive as Nico
Rosberg’s teammate in the coming year while the future of the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher is still uncertain.
Even though, there have been a lot of rumours that the British squad is not very pleased with the decision of the 27-year-old. Nevertheless, Whitmarsh has said that they are ready to provide everything to the Briton which he may need to win this year’s championship
title.
In addition, he said that Hamilton is a great driver and can still win the championship title if he performs well in the remainder of the season.
“Yes I think very much so. We have a competitive car at the minute and we have six races left. We can win all of those six races and in my view we can win the Championship,” Whitmarsh said. “So starting next week in Japan we will be focussing on that. Lewis
is a great racing driver and massively competitive. He knows there are races to win and races he wants to win himself. So we will be working hard to do that.”
At present, the 2008 world champion is standing at fourth place in the drivers’ championship with 142 points. Besides, he is ahead of Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and is behind Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.
Though, he is quite behind the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who is at the top of the drivers’ rankings. However, he has still been considered as one of the most competent title contenders.
It will be exciting to see how the British driver performs in the remaining six races of the season.
