Martin Whitmarsh says Lewis Hamilton’s wall incident did not cause gearbox damage – Formula 1 news
Team principal of McLaren told that Lewis Hamilton’s wall incident was slight and did not cause any damage to the car.
He told that they knew that there was some problem with the gearbox a few laps prior to the retirement of Hamilton during the Singapore Grand Prix.
He told that Hamilton’s wall incident was very minute and it was just a brush as compared to the other drivers. He explained that Bruno Senna of Williams and some other driver had a comparatively severe collision. He told that the car was monitored by the
team, after the race, and nothing was wrong. There were no signs of wall incident and it was just a slight brush which could have caused no damage. Additionally, he said that the incident was unexpected.
“If you look at Senna and a few others, they bounced off quite heavily,” Whitmarsh said. “They [Engineers] were absolutely content that it was a very light brush and not one that would create any damage. I don't think today had anything to do with yesterday.
It was totally unexpected.”
Whitmarsh told that they had anticipated the incident prior to the retirement of the British driver because they could see the temperate and pressure rising.
He believes that Hamilton is still in the right frame of mind and can win the championship by the end of current season. Besides, he said that the veteran driver has expressed sportsman spirit by thanking his team for their efforts over the weekend despite
facing an unfortunate incident.
“It's a much stronger-minded Lewis than we've seen before. He's very focused and knows there are 150 points available that we are going to work hard to collect as many as we can,” he added.
Hamilton was the runner up in the Drivers Championship before the Singapore GP however he is dropped to the 4th position because he could not add any point to his 142. There are still six more races to go in the current season.
Hamilton has shown some impressive performance in the latter half of the current season and it was anticipated that he would win the Singaporean GP but his gearbox went faulty. Let’s see will the British driver be able to make his way to the championship
title in the current 2012 season or not.
