Martin Whitmarsh says he is happy with Sergio Perez after Monaco GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that he is very happy with his driver, Sergio Perez’s performance in the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix despite the incident with Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.
Perez showed some remarkable pace at Circuit de Monaco and was fighting for fifth place during the ending laps. However, unfortunately he had a collision with Raikkonen due to which he had to move back to the pits without finishing the race. On the other
hand, the Finn had a puncture and could only come 10th in the race.
The Mexican driver faced immense criticism from the 2007 world champion after the preceding race. However, Whitmarsh has expressed that he is pleased with the performance of their veteran driver in the last round.
“That won't help. Maybe someone should punch him in the face. I don't think we should have too much to complain about there,” the McLaren team boss is quoted as saying by Autosport. “That is what happens in Monaco occasionally. I am happy with his spirit
and his challenge.”
“You can over push sometimes but I think he did some great overtakes. I have got to be pleased that he is there, he is committed and racing,” Whitmarsh added.
“You can argue it different ways: Checo will feel he wasn't given the space and he was crowded by Kimi, which I can understand,” he added.
Presently, the 23-year-old is standing at the 12th place in the drivers’ championship with 12 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso and behind his major opponent, Adrian Sutil of Force India.
He has been considered as one of the most talented youngsters in F1. He performed convincingly well with Sauber during the last season and joined the Woking-based squad as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement. However, he has not been able to attain competitive
results with consistency for his team in the season until now.
It will be thrilling to see how he performs in the forthcoming races and whether he will be able to come up to the expectations of his team and fans or not.
