Martin Whitmarsh says he is hopeful for competitive qualifying round in upcoming Valencia GP
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that he is hopeful for a competitive qualifying round of the upcoming European Grand Prix, which will take place on June 26, 2011 at the Valencia Street Circuit.
Whitmarsh added that he is hoping to close the qualifying gap from the other strong team, Red Bull in Valencia.
The team principal admitted that McLaren made good progress in the previous grands prix qualifying rounds. In addition, he said the other strong teams still have very good pace and were ahead of them during the qualifiers.
He said, “We haven't had the quickest qualifying car; there are some changes this weekend in that the FIA will enforce a strict parc ferme regulation which will mean that the car which qualifies will be the car that races.”
Whitmarsh went on to mention, “But I think we've got to assume that everyone's been working hard. We've got a few components that we're going to bring to the race, I think we've got two very motivated drivers and we'll do our best to win there. We've won
at most circuits obviously; it would be nice to win at Valencia.”
McLaren driver Jenson Button made an impressive run in recently held Canadian Grand Prix. He won the race for the first time in the 2011 season for McLaren. After the race, the Brit said that he can beat Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship.
On the other hand, his teammate Lewis Hamilton retired from the Canadian Grand Prix after a collision with him in the starting laps of the race.
McLaren were disappointed with Hamilton’s retirement, as they were expecting a podium finish in the Montreal race weekend.
After the Canada Grand Prix, the team has delivered some new parts to their 2011 car for better results at the upcoming Valencia Grand Prix. They believe that both of their drivers will make improvements during the qualifying rounds in the remainder of the
2011 Formula 1 season.
