Martin Whitmarsh says he is satisfied with Sergio Perez’s start – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that he is very much satisfied with the performance of their new driver, Sergio Perez in the first two races of the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Perez performed convincingly well in 2012 with Sauber and successfully managed to secure an agreement with the Woking based squad for this season as a replacement of Lewis Hamilton who has moved to Mercedes.
The Mexican driver has only been able to secure two points in this season until now with his ninth place finish in the Malaysian Grand Prix. However, Whitmarsh has said that he is fully satisfied with the performance of the 23-year-old.
In addition, the Briton expressed that Perez has shown good pace despite facing immense pressure. He also said that the youngster didn’t make any kind of mistakes in his driving and they consider him a great asset for their team.
“I'm massively satisfied given that we've given him a very hard start,” Whitmarsh said. “He's stayed calm, been a great team player; there's been a lot of pressure. He's not made any mistakes, driven well and been a great team asset.”
Besides, he said that they still need to make some essential developments in their car for which they are working really hard. Additionally, he said that they are looking forward to come up stronger with some significant step-ups in the Chinese Grand Prix.
“We can improve the car from where it was in Australia. I think the improvements we made [at Sepang] were not just circuit related; I think we made some small steps forward with the car. Not as much as I'd like but some reasonable steps,” he added.
It is to be noted that the British squad faced some huge technical and tyre management issues during the last season due to which their drivers could not score competitive points with consistency. Nevertheless, their hopes are high for this year’s championship and they are targeting to make the necessary advancement in their car to attain better results in the upcoming races. Let’s see how they perform in the third race of the season at Shanghai International Circuit in China.
