Martin Whitmarsh says that F1 has become more unpredictable than before – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, has stated that Formula 1 has become a much more unpredictable racing sport than it was ever before and that will help win audience in America.
“North American sport focuses significantly on entertainment,” Whitmarsh told in an interview. “Formula 1 over the years has probably not placed enough emphasis on that. Now, if you look at the last few championships, you've got a lack of predictability.
Things like DRS, which the purists would never have accepted in yesteryear, was a right and appropriate concession to be made to the spectacle. Formula 1 is much more unpredictable and, as a consequence, much more entertaining than it was only a couple of
years ago.”
He thinks that the reason the United States Grand Prix has failed to become a continuous event is that they have been lacking in providing entertainment to the respective audience. They have not been promoting the event properly but he believes that while
the task can be a huge challenge, America is still a golden opportunity for F1.
Since the United States GP is taking place on a new track, Circuit of the Americas, this weekend in the city of Austin, he is sure that a purpose built track will turn out to be in favour of the sport and will help in making the event permanent in America.
The last time United States GP took place was back in 2007 which was in fact won by McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton. However, the event failed to excite the F1 fans as sixteen cars were taken off the track due to safety reasons. Whitmarsh insists that they
have the product that will progress in America and the importance of this should not be underestimated as the country brings in a lot of sponsors. America is one of the top investors in the F1 community.
All teams and drivers are immensely excited over the return of F1 in United States. Even though the drivers are unfamiliar with the new track, they are quite enthusiastic about exploring it. The return of the event could not have come on a better time as
the championship reaches final stages.
