Martin Whitmarsh says winning 2011 championship still possible for McLaren – Formula 1 news
McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that winning the 2011 world championship is still possible for the team despite the Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel success in the 2011 Belgium Grand Prix.
Whitmarsh added that there are still some races in the rest of the 2011 Formula 1 season, which they can win. In addition, he stated that the team’s goal is to win next races of the ongoing season at the moment.
The team principal told the media that they are planning to make their MP4-26 car quicker for the next race weekends in order to challenge the season’s championship.
Whitmarsh commented, “The championship looks pretty ambitious but at the moment we have to be positive, and the fans expect it. If Ferrari and McLaren say we are going to free-wheel now, I don't think that is the right message. I think the fans deserve a
stronger battle than that.”
He also mentioned, “There is not a line you draw and say, this is purely this year, on the other side of the line that is purely next year. You are learning and gaining this year, and that helps for next year. And occasionally you learn things from next
year's development programme that you can use this year.”
He discussed the Belgium Grand Prix and added that from the championship perceptive the Spa race results are disappointing for them, because they were moving towards their right direction before that. However, he stated that they will try to make their car
more competitive for the rest of the ongoing season in order to challenge 2011 year’s title.
Apart from that, the Woking-based outfit principal informed that they are also working on their next F1 season’s car. He mentioned that they are hopeful the team can take a strong start to the next season with their more developed car.
McLaren driver Jenson Button tried his best to do better for his team in the Belgium Grand Prix. He started his race from the 13th place on the opening grid and after struggling on the sets of medium and soft tyres by Pirelli he
ended up in the third spot.
Let’s see whether McLaren manage to challenge the 2011 championship or not in the end.
