Martin Whitmarsh sure McLaren will close gap in Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 News
Recent reports have revealed that Formula 1 McLaren boss, Martin Whitmarsh, is sure that his team will get closer to Red Bull Racing team in the Spanish Grand Prix, as they have set a plan to introduce some more upgrades in their new car, in a fortnight.
The Woking-based outfit took part in the Turkish Grand Prix, with hopes of winning the race. They successfully finished their Friday free practice, but the qualifying round proved unlucky for the teams’ drivers, which include Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button,
as both failed to secure their pole positions for the Sunday race.
After a successful China race with Hamilton, McLaren was surprised after the superb performance of the Red Bull’s closest challenger, Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, in the qualifying round. The German driver was fifth in the Shanghai race, however, he continued
to work hard and secured his third pole place for the race, at the Istanbul Park Circuit.
The boss, explained, "We were coming here with the intention of bringing some performance. Various things conspired against us - we had a rig failure in a test on Thursday back in the UK, we had a wet first session which took out quite a lot of our opportunity
to develop the car.”
He added that McLaren would like to win this season’s title, as their drivers showed an excellent performance in the China race and also, their overall progress is good at this moment. In order to achieve the 2011 year’s title, McLaren would like to be in
the front row on the grid.
Whitmarsh went on to add, "We can still win this race if we get it right and others get it wrong. We acknowledge that Red Bull is very strong at the moment and we haven't made the step forward that we wanted to this weekend, but that only makes us more determined
to do it in two weeks' time."
He admitted that his team was not in strong form at the start of Turkish race weekend, but he hopes both drivers will try their best to win the race today.
