Martin Whitmarsh underplays McLaren pace in FP1 of 2012 German GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has underplayed the pace of their drivers, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in the first free Friday practice session of 2012 German Grand Prix held at Hockenheimring.
Button topped the timesheet in FP1 of the German GP and was followed by his compatriot, Hamilton. Moreover, both the drivers seemed comfortable behind the wheel of their updated car MP4-27 and successfully gathered the essential information so as to make
the necessary assessment of the upgrade package.
However, Whitmarsh believes that nothing can be brought into fact at this point in time and they still need some time to make the considerable preparations so as to come up stronger on the race day.
“Well we haven't done debrief yet so I think it's too early to tell!” Whitmarsh said. “I think again this hasn't been particularly clean session, I mean it's obviously nice to be topping timesheets but I think it's a bit early to be punching air right now.
I think car was balanced from outset, today we tried few other little changes so for us it's been a reasonable session given the sprinkling of rain throughout it. I mean, data looks reasonable, but I haven't asked drivers - I'm about to listen to them and
we'll find out what they say.”
It will be important to mention that the Woking based team faced issues in the last two grands prix and could not attain the desired results. Nonetheless, they have been trying their best to resolve the ongoing problems to strike back in the title fight.
At present, the Woking based team is standing at fourth place in the constructors’ championship with 142 points. Furthermore, they are 74 points behind the leading team, Red Bull Racing.
Meanwhile, the 2009 world champion is at 8th position in the drivers’ standings with 50 points. Besides, he is behind Romain Grosjean of Lotus and is ahead of Sergio Perez of Sauber.
On the other hand, the 2008 world champion is at 4th place in the drivers’ rankings with 92 points. Additionally, he is behind Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull and is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.
