Martin Whitmarsh warns Lewis Hamilton to control his aggression after the Turkish Grand Prix
McLaren’s team boss, Martin Whitmarsh, has recently given a warning to the 2008 Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton, after he finished in 4th place at the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday, May 8th, at the Istanbul Park Circuit, outside
Istanbul.
Hamilton made a blunder while attempting to overtake Mark Webber’s Red Bull during the first lap of the race due to which he dropped back to 6th place behind his teammate, the 2009 Formula 1 world champion, Jenson Button.
However, Lewis was able to overtake his teammate during lap 6 before dropping back to 6th place once again since his first set of tyres wore off.
In light of these stints, the team boss stated that since the 2011 Pirelli tyres degrade quite quickly, Hamilton would have to choose his own battles in the future and control his anger.
“We want Lewis to attack but sometimes it does not pay off. If you look at Lewis's race pace it was OK later in the race but the tyres are so delicate and if you scrap with others including your own team-mate you will damage your tyres. In a race that critical
you can't do that”, said Whitmarsh.
The young British driver admitted that he was trying a bit too hard to gain some ground during the first lap of the race in order to gain an advantage for the rest of the race.
“If I hadn't damaged the tyres at the beginning, we would have been a lot closer. The beginning was a disaster so it was damage limitation really. The race is not won at the first two corners. I was impatient and that was my fault but it was a good recovery”,
said Hamilton.
The team is quite disappointed with its performance at the first race of the European phase of the 2011 Formula 1 season as they were expecting much better results.
However, Fernando Alonso scored his first podium position of the season behind the 2 Red Bull Racing Team’s drivers who scored their first 1-2 finish of the season this weekend.
