Martin Whitmarsh welcomes Sergio Perez in McLaren – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has warmly welcomed Sergio Perez of Sauber in their team for 2013 as the replacement of Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton’s contract with the Woking based team is going to expire at the end of this season and he has recently confirmed that he has joined Mercedes for the next year as Michael Schumacher’s replacement.
Meanwhile, Whitmarsh has confirmed that Perez is going to be their race driver from the coming season and has delightfully welcomed him in their team. Moreover, he said that the Mexican driver has performed tremendously well in the season so far and they
are looking forward to see more of him in the future.
“On behalf of everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, I'm delighted to welcome Sergio on board,” Whitmarsh said. “His performances throughout 2012 have convinced us that he's an extremely exciting prospect for future.”
He also said that they are very impressed by the performance of the 22-year-old who has secured three podium finishes in the season until now. He added that they have been assessing the performance of Perez and are pleased to have him in their team. Besides,
he said that they will try to polish his driving skills and capabilities to make him even more successful driver in the sport.
“It was a string of giant-killing performances, a trio of podiums and a brilliant fastest lap in this year's Monaco GP that showed us that Sergio lacks nothing in terms of speed and commitment. We've been monitoring his progress carefully for some months,
now that he's become part of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, our task will be to refine and develop his abilities as his career progresses over the coming years,” he added.
Additionally, the Briton has said that Jenson Button and Perez will be great teammates and are surely capable of winning the world championship titles.
On the other hand, Perez said that he is very happy to become a part of such a great team and expressed his gratitude towards Whitmarsh for giving him the opportunity.
In addition, he said that he has tried to deliver his best in the current season so as to prove his potential and is now focussing to perform well in the remainder of the season.
