Martin Wiegele ready to defend title at Saint-Omer Open
Austrian Martin Wiegele is ready to defend his title at the 12th edition of Saint-Omer Open, presented by Neuflize OBC. Wiegele is the first defending champion in the championship history to take part in two successive events.
The three-time winner on the Challenge Tour spoke to the press regarding his bid in the clubhouse of the Aa St Omer Golf Club in Lumbres, northern France where the next event has been scheduled.
Wiegele will break the curse of not defending the title in the 12 years of the event as never before has any player defended the title in subsequent year. However, this defending champion is not only ready to make another appearance, but he is also keen
to lift another trophy.
One year ago, Wiegele captured two titles in one month and had his name acknowledged on the European tour. The 32-year-old notched Kärnten Golf Open in the first week of the June and after spending time a span of two weeks on a rock concert, the player decided
to rock the field at Aa St Omer Golf Club.
Included in the field is another winner, David Dixon, who won the title in 2008. The Swede will be returning to the course after giving a decent performance in the BMW Italian Open, which took place last week in Turin, Italy. The player finished 15th in
the tournament and with such an impressive finish, he is ready to take a chance on the trophy put on stake for the €600,000 event.
Dixon spoke to the press about his form and the tournament and said, “I’ve done well at St Omer in the past and I’m starting to play nicely, so I felt I could do with going there and having a right go to try to win it again, which would take the pressure
off for the rest of the year. So the more you play the course, the better you get. I’m really looking forward to going back.”
The player also discussed the advantages present in the tournament, owing to its dates cohering with the US Open, which is the second major of the season. He said that majority of the top guns were engaged in the US Open, which gave opportunity to rest of
the players to test their luck on the trophy.
