Martin Woods signs deal at Doncaster Rovers
Martin Woods has signed a new three year contract with Doncaster Rovers that will keep the midfielder tied to the Keepmoat Stadium until 2013.
Woods was rewarded with a new contract after making 99 appearances for the club. He will win his 100th appearance away to the current Championship leaders Queens Park rangers on Saturday.
The former under-21 Scottish International began his career at Leeds. He made just one appearance for the club before being loaned out to Hartlepool United. When Leeds were relegated the midfielder moved to Sunderland.
Woods was given few opportunities at the club and found it difficult to break into the Premier League team. He only made 8 appearances before moving to Rotherham United in 2006. The Scotsman had a fantastic season at the League One club and became something
of a cult hero with numerous man of the match awards, outstanding goals and he was also named Rotherham’s player of the season.
In 2007, Woods joined rivals Doncaster Rovers despite interest from a range of clubs. The midfielder found it difficult during his first season and was loaned to Yeovil for one month before he established himself as a first team regular in the Doncaster
team and went on to captain the side.
Preston North End tried to sign Woods earlier this year in a deal worth £500,000 but the player has now committed his long term future to the club. Doncaster Manager Sean O’Driscoll will be delighted his influential midfielder has signed a new deal.
Woods follows in the steps of midfielder James Coppinger who signed a new deal earlier this week and committed his future to the club.
Rovers and Woods will face a stern test on Saturday with QPR, undefeated so far this season. However, Doncaster are currently in 7th position and have lost only one game in their 7 matches this season.
