Martin kaymer hopes Rory McIlory can meet the challenges at the top
No one knows better than Martin Kaymer to what it takes to be the world number one.
Pulling in a quarter final victory at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship last year, the lanky German rose to the top of the world.
Although he suffered a defeat at the hands of Luke Donald in the final individual round, he is still only the second German in the history to rise to the top of the golf world after legendary Bernhard Langer.
Currently poised at number four on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Kaymer is well aware that a string of good performances in the rest of the season can easily land him in the top spot.
He acknowledges the fact that being on top of the world has a whole different meaning. He said, "To be No. 1 is a big deal, You're the best golf player in the whole world”.
Starting off his blistering career a few years back, Kaymer came out as the force to reckon on both sides of the Atlantic, landing the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship title for two consecutive years.
He went over to bag the major title, the PGA Championship in 2010, his first major title of his career.
For the moment, Kaymer has suffered consecutive setbacks earlier in the year and failed to make the cut on his favourite hunting ground, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship this year.
He hopes that Rory McIlroy is able to handle the pressure that comes with the position.
He added, "I hope that Rory can handle it in a nice way and I'm sure that he will be fine as long as he sticks to his priorities and continues working on the main things and not get distracted by things off the golf course".
He continued, "He knows exactly what he wants to do and the way he wants to be. So he has very strong character. He's a very brave player. He's the best player in the world and he deserves the spot".
Like always, Kaymer did not go overboard to laud McIlroy out of the blue, instead he maintained that four or five golfers on the top are performing consistently well and it remains difficult to anoint any one as the best among them.
He insists that McIlroy might be great in his own respects but Lee Westwood and Donald both have been performing well for a considerable period of time.
Kaymer is not disappointed with the lacklustre start of the current season. In his four appearances in 2012, he missed the cut at Abu Dhabi, pulled in a joint 13th and another two joint ninth.
He carded nine birdies in the last 12 holes at WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai last year to land the title.
For the moment, the top-ranked German is waiting for the right opportunity to pull in another marvellous bid in order to find his way back to the top.
