Martina De Memme wins Women's 400m freestyle title: Day three - 2011 Austrian Qualifying Meet
Martina De Memme of Italy won gold medal of Women's 400m freestyle on final day of the 2011 Austrian Short Course Qualifying Meet on Sunday, November 27 in Vienna New Town, Austria.
The 20-year-old De Memme proved her eligibility for the crown by reaching the finishing end in a fastest time of 4 minutes and 08.06 seconds. Her title claiming efforts was almost 3 seconds slower than the meet record of 4 minutes and 05.40 seconds, owned by Jordis Steinegger of Austria in 2009.
The gold medallist remained 1.26 seconds ahead of her strongest rival, Martina Caramignoli of Italy, who reached the podium for silver medal by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 09.32 seconds.
The 20-year-old Caramignoli remained 0.81 seconds ahead of her team-member, Diletta Carli, who ended her swim in a third fastest time of 4 minutes and 10.13 seconds. The 15-year-old Carli remained 0.92 seconds faster from Austria's Steinegger, who failed to defend her title and ended fourth with a timing of 4 minutes and 11.05 seconds.
She was chased by Giulia Gabrielleschi of Italy, who obtained fifth position by completing her swim in a time of 4 minutes and 13.47 seconds.
Meanwhile, Mads Glaesner of Denmark acquired gold medal of Men's 400m freestyle. The 23-year-old Glaesner posted a phenomenal time of 3 minutes and 45.68 seconds for gold medal. His time remained nearly 2 seconds behind the meet record of 3 minutes and 43.94 seconds owned by Federico Colbertaldo of Austria in 2007.
Glaesner was followed by Christian Scherubl of Austria who earned silver medal by posting a time of 3 minutes and 46.82 seconds.
Scherubl was trailed by Colbertaldo, who remained 0.20 seconds slower and hit the wall with the third fastest timing of 3 minutes and 47.02 seconds.
The fourth fastest spot of the race wsa claimed by Markus Rogan of Austria, who was 0.42 seconds slower from his former finisher and concluded his swim in a time of 3 minutes and 47.44 seconds.
The arena admired ruthless efforts of all finalists in the 400m discipline. In addition, the podium finishers were invited on the victory stand for prizes after the completion of the session.
