Martina Eberl-Ellis drains her last putt in Germany, plans to quit pro golf
German Martina Eberl-Ellis was more than thrilled on the final day of the Unicredit Ladies German Open, as she stunned the spectators by draining her final putt, despite finishing 57th.
Ellis played in a tough field that featured contenders like the defending champion Diana Luna, Lindsey Wright, Laura Davies, who won the 2010 edition of the German Open, Karen Lunn, and Scottish teen, Carly
Booth.
The tournament, held at the prestigious Golfpark Gut Hausern Munich, was the joint effort of LET (Ladies European Tour) officials and Audi, the event’s sponsor.
The field contained strong contenders, who boast solid profiles both on the LET and the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association), but a huge number of German players in roster was enough to keep the crow
thrilled throughout the four days
Ellis kicked off the tournament amid massive applause from the spectators. She posted a 72 in the opening round—something even her fans did not expected her to do. The experienced star appeared to be in a difficult
situation when some of her fellow German players surged past her.
The second round went even better, as Ellis ramped up pressure on her rivals by registering a 70. She reeled off 2 straight birdies on the par-2 2nd and par-5 3rd hole. On the back nine
of the second round, the German golfer shot two birdies and three bogeys.
Although pumped by a balanced performance in the first two rounds, Ellis marred her leaderboard position after recording 77 and 75 in the third and fourth round, respectively.
Ellis reportedly plans to quit professional golf, as the German Open 2012 was her last event on her home course.
When she holed her last putt in the final round, the crowd gave a massive round of applause, indicating that this was certainly her last putt as a pro star.
Speaking to the media about her last performance in the event, Ellis said that she was quite happy after playing in front of German spectators.
“It was my last putt here at the German Open and I’m so happy. It would have been a great stage to finish my career on but I have contracts and will play the rest of the year,” the German contender said.
