Martina Granstrom snatches Women’s 200m butterfly gold: Day two – 2012 Swedish Grand Prix, Uppsala
Martina Granstrom displayed more urgency towards the finishing wall and snatched gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly on second day of the 2012 Swedish Grand Prix in Uppsala, Sweden on Sunday, February 5.
The 20-year-old Granstrom spoiled the party of her challengers in the distant butterfly swim. With her incredible skills and long stroke strategy, she experienced no complication in claiming the crown of the four-lap swim.
She was the first swimmer to jump off the starting blocks and earned a significant lead over her competitors with the help of her powerful dolphin kicks. She completed her initial lap of the race in 29.33 seconds while her closest competitor, Ingvild Snildal
clocked 29.78 seconds for the equivalent distance.
Both swimmers locked horns in the next lap, but Granstrom succeeded in overwhelming Snildal’s effort by submitting a time of 1 minute and 01.65 seconds. On the other hand, Snildal remained nearly two seconds behind her leading swimmer in the first round
and hit the wall with a 1 minute and 03.47 seconds effort.
The same continued in third lap, where Granstrom sustained her fastest spot by producing a time of 1 minute and 35.06 seconds. Her effort was chased by Snildal, who stayed 3.26 seconds slower and concluded her third lap of the event with the timing of 1
minute and 38.32 seconds.
Subsequently, Granstrom demonstrated her gruelling efforts and met expectations of her supporters by accomplishing gold medal of the event in a time of 2 minute and 08.22 seconds. She left no doubt about her glorious win as Snildal remained almost five seconds
behind her and settled on the victory stand for second position by posting 2 minutes and 13.69 seconds on the wall.
The silver medallist was chased by Petra Granlund, who seized third fastest spot of the race by touching the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 15.70 seconds.
The arena enjoyed breath-taking struggles of all participants in the butterfly discipline whereas the winners collected their medals and accolades at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship. In addition, the session concluded after the completion
of all scheduled events in Men and Women’s corner.
