Martina Grimaldi wins Women’s 10km Open Water: Day one – European Open Water Swimming Championships
One of the most outstanding Italian Open Water swimmers, Martina Grimaldi won the gold medal of the 10km Open Water Discipline on the initial day of the 2011 European Open Water Swimming Championships on Wednesday, September 7, in Eilat, Israel.
Grimaldi was the strongest swimmer of the Open Water swim, as she crossed the finishing line in a fabulous time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 18.6 seconds. With her splendid effort, she remained 0.60 seconds ahead of her following swimmer and her team-member,
Rachele Bruni.
Bruni captured the silver medal of the event as she submitted a fantastic time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 19.2 seconds. These top fastest swimmers were trailed by Nadine Reichert of Germany, who remained 0.80 seconds slower than Reichert and posted a time
of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 20.0 seconds for bronze medal.
The Italian gold medallist won the silver medal in the same discipline, by clocking a time of 2 hours, 01 minutes and 59.9 seconds at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. She also won the bronze medal of the same discipline at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Nevertheless, Margarita Dominguez of Spain claimed the fourth fastest spot of the swim, as she remained 4.50 seconds away from the third fastest finisher and passed the finishing line, with a timing of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 24.5 seconds. In the meantime,
Karla Sitic of Croatia followed the Spanish swimmer on the finishing spot by posting a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 24.7 seconds for fifth position.
Meanwhile, Anna Olasz of Hungary stayed microseconds away from her preceding swimmer, Sitic and ended her swim in the sixth place. Olasz was followed by Anna Guseva of Russia and Jana Pechanova of Czech Republic, who acquired seventh and eighth best spots,
with timings of 2:00:26.2 and 2:00:27.8 hours, respectively.
The crowd enjoyed the splendid efforts of these finalists, while the championship will continue for four more days to complete all scheduled events.
