Martina Grimaldi wins Women’s 10km Open Water title: 2011 European Open Water Swimming Championships
Martina Grimaldi of Italy clinched the gold medal of Women’s 10km Open Water discipline on the opening day of the 2011 European Open Water Swimming Championships, which took place on September 7, in Eilat, Israel.
The Italian veteran showered her expertise in the open water discipline, by submitting a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 18.6 seconds. With her remarkable effort in the distant freestyle swim, Grimaldi remained 0.60 seconds ahead of her following swimmer
and team-mate, Rachele Bruni, who ended her swim in a third fastest place by reporting in a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 19.2 seconds. She was trailed by Nadine Reichert of Germany, who remained in a lead of 0.80 seconds over her preceding swimmer and posted
a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 20.0 seconds.
The Italian expert owns the silver medal of the same event, as she proved her dominance at the 2008 European Championships. The next year, she also pocketed the bronze medal of the event at the 2009 Rome World Championships, while she pocketed a gold medal
in the 10km swim at the 2010 World Open Water Championships in Roberval. Furthermore, Grimaldi reached the podium for the silver medal of the 10km race at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
Nevertheless, the medal winners were trailed by Margarita Dominguez of Spain, who remained at a prominent distance of 4.5 seconds from Reichert and clocked a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 24.5 seconds for the fourth finest spot. The fifth position was
claimed by Karla Sitic of Croatia, who was only 0.2 seconds slower than her preceding finisher and completed her swim in a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 24.7 seconds.
In the meantime, Sitic was marginally ahead of her closest competitor, Anna Olasz of Hungary, who posted near a same time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 24.7 seconds to acquire sixth position of the event. The seventh best finishing spot of the event was claimed
by Anna Guseva of Russia, as she remained nearly two seconds slower than her former finisher and passed the finishing line with a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 26.2 seconds. Meanwhile, Jana Pechanova of Czech Republic transpired as the eighth fastest swimmer
of the Open Water discipline and concluded her swim by producing a time of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 27.8 seconds.
There were total 26 swimmers in the event, where 22 completed their races and three of them were unable to finish. One participant did not swim in the meet. In addition, the winners were called upon the medal rostrum for their laudable swims after the session.
