Martina Hingis advises Caroline Wozniacki to fight the powerhouses - Tennis News
Former top ranked Swiss, Martina Hingis, advised the reigning world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, to pull up her socks and put up a fight against the big powerhouses of women tennis. She cited that likes of Serena Williams,
Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Petra Kvitova, etc are here to stay and they are going to give her a very tough time at Major events all the time. She needs to devise a strategy against these big guns otherwise her dream of winning a Grand Slam title will
not be accomplished any time soon.
Hingis stated this after the top seed Wozniacki was knocked-out of the Australian Open tournament at the hands of the defending champion, Kim Clijsters, in straight sets. Many tennis legends have criticized the Dane of not
a deserving world number one at the moment and Petra Kvitova deserves that spot more than anyone else at the present. Wozniacki is just there because she gobbled up multiple points in every tournament she played that kept her at that spot. She came close to
losing her top spot to Kvitova in the season opener at Sydney but Kvitova failed to clinch the title and wasted a massive opportunity to move on the top of the ranks.
Talking about her career and difficulties she faced while squaring off against big guns, Hingis said, “I didn't step back. I tried not to let them push me (around). Eventually you play one Williams, you play the second, you
play (Lindsay) Davenport, and you play (Jennifer) Capriati, who were all pushing forward. They were stronger than me. It's hard to play three, four players like that in a row (because) it's three setters after three setters after three setters.”
Hingis advised the world number one, Wozniacki, to stick to the task and plan her way out to fight these strong women. She further advised the top ranked Dane not to get pushed back and adopt an aggressive strategy to overcome
tough opponents and win a grand Slam title.
Clijsters defeated Wozniacki to set her path straight for the second Australian Open title in succession. She is the hot favourite to win the title and her triumph over reigning world number one confirms any doubts about
her ability to hammer the upcoming talented stars. She plays world number three Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi-final of the tournament on Thursday, while Kvitova will face off against the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, in the other final-four clash.
