Martina Hingis and Jim Courier inaugurated in the list of Rogers Cup Hall of Famers – Tennis News
Former world number ones, Martina Hingis and Jim Courier, are inducted in the esteemed list of Rogers Cup Hall of Famers. They were ecstatic to be greeted with such an honour and gave their best shot on speaking French at the ceremony.
The Swiss superstar, Hingis, won five Grand Slam titles in her professional career. She triumphed on two different occurrences in Canada in 1999 and 2000, the latter one being the conquest at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Swiss tennis icon addressed in French to the spectators present at the beautifully designed Uniprix Stadium and impressed the listeners with her enhanced foreign spoken language skills. She learned that from her beloved husband,
Thibault Hutin.
The translation of her comments is given as follows, “I was able to win here at least once in Montreal and always had really good results. It's one of the nicer events on the tour you have throughout the year. It was one of my
favourites."
Courier won the Roland Garros French Open title in 1991 and successfully defended the title in the following season addressed the crowd in the French language as well but after few moments, he took permission to speak in his native
language. He commented, “I have good memories from here because I won doubles here. It's the most European city in North America so it's a pleasure for me to come here and play with and against older peers.”
In all, the American won four Grand Slam titles in his era and managed to sneak into the semi-finals in Canada on two different occurrences in the singles category before managing to clinch the title in 1993 but that was in the
doubles category. He teamed up with Mark Knowles to lift the crown at Montreal and deprived the team of the local start, Glenn Michibata, and Courier’s compatriot, David Pate.
Michael Chang and Martina Navratilova contested a friendly match against the two inducted Hall of Famers that delighted the crowd. Courier further added, “It's really an honour for me. Being in a hall of fame is rare. It's a good
feeling to know that I have achieved a few things in sport so it's special.”
It is always good to know that someone out there is highly thankful to your services for any department and these two latest inductees are definitely the world class acts of their times; thoroughly deserved the honour to say the
least.
