Martina Navratilova praises the newly ranked world number one Maria Sharapova – Tennis News
Russian number one, Maria Sharapova, is now once again the world number one. She defeated the Czech starlet, Petra Kvitova, in the semi-final of the Roland Garros French Open and reclaimed her throne from the Belarusian superstar,
Victoria Azarenka.
For one reason or the other, players that belong to top the world never forget their way up. They are born to be number one and the Russian superstar has proved that injuries can hold a player from attaining her throne for sometime
but can’t deny her from reclaiming it.
Former world number one, Martina Navratilova, was happy to see the 25-year-old Russian back on the top of the rankings, having made a fantastic comeback to the world of tennis this year after a major injury layoff.
Navratilova praised the Russian stating, “She's a superstar, and it's always good if a superstar is at the top. Serena and Venus Williams haven't been No.1 for a while. For Maria, coming back from shoulder surgery where most people
would have called it a day. I was really impressed with not just the physical and mental focus it takes to rehab, and believe and keep coming back and keep doing everything that you have to physically, but then to overcome the mental aspects of the game. She
completely conquered it, and kudos to that."
Sharapova enjoyed a soothing massage and enjoyed the room service after becoming the world number one again. The celebrations were held for later because she is still hunting another record; completing a Career Slam by ousting
the likes of the 21st seed Italian, Sara Errani, in the final of the French Open. The final will be played on the eve of Saturday and the Russian enters the red clay courts of Paris, France as a hot favourite to clasp the missing Grand Slam title.
She has been terrific throughout the year; winning two titles in Stuttgart and Rome.
The Russian was on the verge of becoming world number one in the final of the Australian Open in Melbourne but the Belarusian tennis ace ruined her perfect comeback with straight sets bullying. However, she continued to fight for
that spot and now that she has achieved that she would like to celebrate that with the French Open title as well. It is going to be a massive night for Sharapova on Saturday. She needs to claim that title and the entire world is waiting to see her lift the
French Open championship trophy.
