Martine Grael, Isabel Swan dominate 470 Women on Day 14: 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
Brazil’s Martine Grael and Isabel Swan sailed tremendously on Day 14 of the 2011 Perth International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championship to move up in the overall standings of 470 Women fleet. Despite their impressive scores, the Brazilian
team could not challenge the leaders of the resultboard, Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos of Spain.
Grael and Swan had a superb run clinching a first and second place in both races of the 14th day. They were assisted by some spectacular weather conditions, as the breeze was gusting around up to 18 knots under a blue sky. The Brazilians were
amazing on Bather’s Bay waters and clinched eighth place in the overall standings at the conclusion of the day.
Grael and Swan were closely followed by Yuka Yoshisako and Nariko Okuma along with Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie on second and third place respectively, in the first race of the day. Meanwhile, in the second race, they finished on second place behind Italy’s
Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol. Third place was taken by 2011 470 European Champions, Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer.
Speaking to the media, 20-year-old Grael said, “Yeah it was a very nice day today, but the other days we did very badly because we had no good starts, which was holding us back a lot. Today we had two good starts and we have done a lot of training before
this Championship so we had speed.”
Swan, on the other hand, added, “I think Martine gives a lot of herself to sailing and is really dedicated and has talent. We also have a good plan, because if we don’t have a good plan to follow we won’t go anywhere. You have to be really professional to
be here, so I think the team work helps a lot to achieve a higher level.”
