Martinez for Chavez: I plan on knocking him out – Boxing News
Argentinean fighter Sergio Martinez believes he is in the best shape to take on WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on September 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Martinez, who is 37, believes the only reason as to why Chavez is the champion is
his dad. According to Martinez, Chavez ‘Son of the Legend’ holds the title just because of the influence his father has on the boxing fraternity.
Martinez has bagged 49 wins, 2 losses, 2 ties 28 knockouts to date, whereas Chavez is an undefeated fighter with 46 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie and 32 knockouts in his portfolio. Although Chavez stands with a better record, he is not the favourite. Analysts and
fans have always criticised Chavez, calling him the paper champion, which according to the champion is not true.
When asked about facing Chavez and dethroning him, Martinez asserted, “I cannot accept the fact he is world champion. The only reason he is world champion is because he is Julio César Chávez Jr., the son of the legend.”
Martinez is known for his knockout power. He has knocked out some real explosive fighters such as Sergiy Dzinziruk and Matthew Macklin. As of now, Martinez plans on knocking out Chavez as well.
“I plan on knocking him out. His size (advantage) is indifferent to me. Kelly Pavlik was the same size … bigger and to me it doesn’t matter,” added the Argentinean fighter, who is a ‘snob’ and ‘an ignorant person’ according to Chavez.
When asked about his preparation for the fight, Martinez revealed, “I think I’m in the best shape of my life right now.”
“The speed and the power that I will deliver to Chávez on September 15th will be enough to knock him out. I will not wait for the judges,” he added.
For now, Martinez is hopeful of defeating Chavez on September 15. On the other hand, Chavez is looking forward to punish Martinez in the ring, to teach the Argentinean a lesson. Since both the fighters are more or less of the same calibre, the fight has
become one of the most anticipated ones of 2012.
