Wigan Athletic manager, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Martinez was all praise for his side after the Latics stunned Liverpool with a 2-1 win at Anfield on Saturday.
The victory, which was the first for Wigan at Anfield, lifted Martinez’s side to 19th in the table and put them just a single point from safety.
The Latics boss, whose side has now suffered only one defeat in their previous seven matches, hailed the historic victory for the club and dedicated the win to the club’s fans, who he admitted did not have much to cheer for this season.
'It is an historic day for us, Wigan beating Liverpool at Anfield'
“That is why we are involved in football to defy the odds and history. I would like to present this moment to our fans as they have not had much to celebrate this season.” Said an elated http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468.
Wigan went in front after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Caldwell-c14440 then grabbed the winner for the Latics in the 63rd minute after Luis Suarez had levelled
things up for the Reds.
However, there were a couple of talking points in the match, most notably a goal from Suarez which was disallowed after referee, Lee Mason thought that the Uruguayan had handled the ball before dispatching it in the goal. The Wigan boss
defended Mason’s decision, terming him as an experienced and qualified official and said that his team was unfazed by the incident as they celebrate their famous victory against the Merseyside club.
He also said that the Uruguayan striker is a cheeky customer in terms of claiming free kicks and getting decisions in his favour.
"I have seen the replay and it is clearly a handball,"
"I think Lee Mason was a very strong referee and we were fortunate with that as we all know Luis Suarez is an artist in getting free-kicks and good situations for himself." He said.
However, the Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish had a totally different say on the matter altogether and believed that the goal should have been allowed.
“It wasn't handball. I must have a different television.” He said.
Dalglish lamented the stunning loss against Wigan and thought that fatigue led to his side’s demise in the match.
The defeat was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809’s fifth in their last six matches and the Scot believed that a tight playing schedule was responsible for the player’s tired performances in recent weeks.
On the other hand, Wigan will look to build on their victory against the Reds in a bid to ward off relegation. Last season, they avoided Premier League exit on the last day, beating Stoke City 1-0 in an away match.
