Wigan Athletic have reportedly given the Merseyside club permission to talk to Roberto Martinez, which puts the Latics boss in pole position for the vacant managerial post.
A number of reports have emerged linking current Wigan Athletic boss, Roberto Martinez, with the vacant manager’s post at Liverpool. Some have even gone as far as stating that the club are currently in talks with the manager to take over at the Reds.
Starting things off with the Daily Post, who have quoted http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Whelan, Wigan Athletic’s owner, stating that Martinez has been given permission to speak with Liverpool.
“I don’t know the exact timescales of when he is due to meet with the Liverpool owners but I will never stand in Roberto’s (Martinez) way.”
Sky Sports News apparently caught the Wigan Athletic owner in a more talkative mood as they have quoted the Wigan Athletic owner going into much more detail.
“If Liverpool are serious then I may lose him.” According to Whelan, Liverpool made an approach for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 earlier on in the week, “when they phoned me I was actually with Roberto having a meeting on what we are doing next season.”
“I did promise http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 and I have always said when a big club comes he would have permission to talk to them and they don’t come any bigger than Liverpool.”
Whelan concluded, “I gave him permission and he will be taking to them soon – I don’t know when, but quite soon.”
Liverpool fans will have mixed reactions as the other candidates for the post seem to be more to the fans liking. Both Andre Villas-Boas and former Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, have been linked with the vacant managerial post and seem to have the fans’ seal of approval.
However, it must be noted that Fenway Sports Group have a habit of interviewing multiple candidates before taking a final decision and this could just be preliminary talks.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 Football Club have not commented on any of the reports thus far as it seems they want to keep the matter in house for the time being. Whoever Liverpool do appoint though will be charged with the task of leading the Reds back in the top four.
