Martinez vs. Macklin set for Fight Night March 17 – Boxing News
Matthew Macklin, Irish middleweight, is all set to face WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez at the Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight card, which will be titled ‘The Real Middleweight Championship’, will take place on March 17, 2012,
and will be televised live on HBO’s ‘World Championship Boxing’.
Right now, Sergio ‘Maravila’ Martinez is training at the Sarmiento’s Boxing Gym in Oxnard, under former junior middleweight champion Pablo Sarmiento. Martinez currently has 48 wins, 2 losses, 2 ties and 27 knockouts in his portfolio, whereas Matthew ‘Mack
the Knife’ Macklin stands with 28 wins, 3 losses and 19 knockouts in his bag.
On his performance and training, trainer Pablo Sarmiento commented, “Sergio is exactly where we want him to be, he’s right on target and everything is going as scheduled. I have no doubt he’s going to put on a spectacular performance against Macklin on March
17.”
It should be noted here that Martinez is currently in the best form of his career. In his previous clash at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in October, Martinez knocked out the then undefeated European middleweight champion Darren Barker during the eleventh
round.
On the other hand, Macklin will be coming off a 12 round split decision loss to Sturm in June 2012. During that fight, Macklin was seen as an underperformer who was staggering in the ring after the fourth. Macklin’s performance was heavily criticised since
it seemed like he was not at all prepared for the bout.
Martinez is currently considered the best fighter in the middleweight division. Taking on Sergio is probably a dream for Macklin and surely a career booster if he the latter wins. Considering Macklin’s recent performances, it can be said that he needs to
train hard in order to reach the mark where he will be capable enough to beat Martinez. On the other hand, Martinez looks in good shape and he has been training for the big day for quite some time now, since he knew, he would get a fight nevertheless. If Macklin
wins this bout, his credibility will grow. Moreover, Macklin cannot afford to lose this one. If he does, he will lose his place in the boxing world.
