Martin’s Dedigout prevails in the Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle
Dedigout broke all barriers, and triumphed in the Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown on 27th April, 2012.
The six-year-old gelding was mounted by jockey, Davy Russell, who succeeded in guiding the runner towards victory.
Russell’s strategy was to settle in the rear and make headway towards the end of the race. The tactic worked well, and he managed to triumph over the Philip Hobbs trained, Colour Squadron, by 2 lengths.
The third place was secured by Lyreen Legend, who fell ½ a length behind the runner-up, whereas the race favourite, Felix Yonger, finished in fifth place.
The winning jockey spoke to the press after the race and stated that:
"I might have struggled if any of those in front of me hadn't kept straight but luckily all of them did and I was able to go through the gap.
"All of the credit goes to Tony Martin. This horse had disappointed in his work a couple of times but we put a tongue-tie on him and decided to ride him with a bit more patience. It all worked out."
Trainer Martin told the press that he wanted to run the horse over a distance of 3 miles, but the rest of the connections assumed a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs would be easier for him to cover.
He appreciated the performance of his runner to a great extent, and stated that he jumped and handled the hurdles well.
As a result of this victory, Paddy Power has announced that Dedigout will enter the RSA Chase success at the Cheltenham Festival in 2013 with the odds of 20 to 1.
It seems that the son of Bob Back, out of mare Dainty Daisy, has a bright future as he triumphed in the Irish Field Handicap Hurdle at Fairyhouse on 9th April, 2012.
Davy Russell led him to the victory over, Novarov, by 2 lengths and he comfortably bagged the purse of £12,458.33.
Owned by Gigginstown House Stud, the bay gelding is currently on a hat-trick and it seems that he will achieve it in his next start.
