Marty Jones transformation slowly catching up to his colt Tres Borrachos, which could prove to be crucial in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic
Del Mar is renowned for its opening day, but 20 years back it featured its own $1million race event which shared the excitement of Del Mar’s opening day. The race was called the Pacific Classic and the race day is the biggest day of the season.
Trainer Martin Jones experienced the initiation of such a grand race at a very young age, and couldn’t have imagined at that point that he will send out a horse trained by him in the Pacific Classic.
Since that time, trainer Marty Jones has come a long way, and for someone who still thinks he is learning the sport, he has certainly made a name for himself in this exciting profession.
Against trainers like Bob Baffert and John Sadler, Marty Jones is has quietly got up and running a consistent barn, tasting success every now and then.
He picks up runners which are not considered either by Baffert or Sadler, and recently it’s all shaping up to be something massive for the trainer.
He is at Del Mar for the Pacific Classic, up against runners trained by Bob Baffert and John Sadler, and without any pressure of losing reputation built on winning big races.
Marty Jones will look to knock both trainers off their feet in the Del Mar feature $1million Grade 1 Pacific Classic, represented by his rejuvenated 6-year-old gelding, Tres Borrachos, against Baffert’s Game on Dude and Sadler’s Twirling Candy.
The son of Ecton Park might now have accomplished what Game on Dude and Twirling Candy have, but unlike these two, who are the most favoured among fans and punters, Tres Borrachos has gone on to win at this track.
His last win was at Del Mar over synthetic surface in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on 30 July, 2011.
That makes a huge difference, and on top of it under Marty Jones, Tres Borrachos has changed his racing style. The front runner now sits and waits, obviously something his rivals have to work on.
Tres Borrachos’s form looks to be better on Poly Track than all the other horses which gives him a fair chance to win it or steal it from the more favoured runners.
