Marussia becomes the second team to not adopt the stepped nose design – Formula 1 news
Marussia is in line to be the second team to go without the popular stepped nose designed adopted by most teams for the 2012 season.
McLaren was the first and the only team to have not adopted the stepped nose design. The FIA changed a few rules for the upcoming season which forces the design of the nose to be a little higher which makes the step a natural outcome.
McLaren though came out with a different approach and gave their new car a traditional nose by curving the nose at the tip. McLaren have been questioned over their design. Martin Whitmarsh also said that he was a little worried about the design of the car
and had to get assurance from the technical team whether they have missed a trick by not going for a stepped nose. The technical team however assured that it is hardly going to make any difference.
McLaren believe that their design give the driver a better view and creates better traction for the car. Marussia now is the second team to adopt the same curved nose.
“In fact, there was little difference in theory between the two solutions. So why take risks with something that we do not know?” a Marussia team source is quoted as saying.
Marussia had a good run in the pre-season tests so far although with their older car as they have yet to unveil their new car. The team was able to run the car for 1500 kilometres. Team principal John Booth said that the team has eked out all the data that
was required from the older car and are now going to focus on unveiling the new car.
“Aside from further mileage for Charles there was nothing more to be gained from our programme to aid our development and we now switch focus to the 2012 car, which we are all looking forward to rolling-out next week,” commented team principal John Booth.
The season begins with the Australian Grand Prix on March 18, 2012. Marussia will want to have the same reliability they had with its 2011 car to get a strong start to the season.
