Marussia confirm Max Chilton as their race driver for 2013 – Formula 1 news
Marussia have confirmed that Max Chilton, who acted as their test driver for the last 6 races of 2012, will race with them in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Chilton performed impressively well in this year’s GP2 Series and secured 4th place finish in the standings. Moreover, he made his F1 outings with the Banbury based team at the Young Driver Test this year and in the first free Friday practice
session at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
Marussia team principal, John Booth has welcomed the 21-year-old in the team and has said that they have full confidence in their decision regarding their next year’s driver line-up.
In addition, he said that they have very well evaluated the performance of Chilton during this season and made the final choice after comparing his statistics with the other potential candidates. Besides, he said that they are feeling very positive about
their decision in this regard.
“We are delighted to welcome Max to the role of race driver with the Marussia F1 Team for the 2013 season,” Booth said. “We have spent a significant amount of time evaluating his performances during 2012, both in our own car in a testing situation and also
from the pit wall as we monitored his progress alongside the other members of our junior talent pool during grand prix support races.”
“We felt confident enough in his ability and potential to appoint him to the role of Reserve Driver in September and since that time his development has been rapid in all aspects,” he added.
Additionally, he said that although they could not achieve desired results in this season, but insisted that they are not feeling upset and are confidently looking forward to come up stronger in the next year to attain good points right from the start.
He also said that it is very important for them to make the most out of the winter testing in order to develop a competitive car for the coming season. Let’s see how Chilton performs alongside Timo Glock in the next season and whether they will be able to
achieve their team’s goal or not.
