Marussia test driver Maria de Villota suffers a life threatening accident – Formula 1 news
Marussia test driver Maria de Villota had a life threatening accident at Duxford Aerodrome near Cambridge when she was returning to the pits after crash testing.
De Villota’s car was smashed into the support truck of Banbury based team as she was coming back to the pits after her initial installation lap and she was taken to the hospital on an ambulance.
According to MALPAS, the emergency medical charity which took the Spaniard to the hospital said that she had some facial and head injuries. Nevertheless, after few hours, they stated that she is in a stable condition when they arrived at Addenbrookes.
Meanwhile, Marussia issued their team statement regarding the incident and said, “At approximately 09.15hrs BST this morning, the Marussia F1 Team's Test Driver Maria De Villota had an accident in the team's MR-01 race car at Duxford Airfield where she was
testing the car for the first time. The accident happened at the end of her first installation run and involved an impact with the team's support truck. Maria has been transferred to hospital. Once her medical condition has been assessed a further statement
will be issued.”
One the other hand, Cambridgeshire Police also expressed that she was critically injured and said,”We have since discovered that the driver has a serious injury,”
It is surely a sad incident in the sport and almost all the drivers and the teams have shown some major concerns over the mishap.
McLaren driver, Jenson Button asserted that de Villota’s accident was a terrible incident.
De Villota is the daughter of former F1 driver, Emilio de Villota. Furthermore, it will be important to mention that she joined Marussia in March and has participated in many autosport events which include the Daytona 24 Hours, Spanish Formula Three, Superleague
Formula championship and Euroseries 3000.
