Marussia to run KERS for the first time in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Marussia will be running KERS on its car for the first time for the 2013 season.
The team secured a deal with Williams to run a development of their unit. Marussia along with HRT are the only two teams on the grid that is not using the power boost system in the current season.
The unit will give a boost of about 0.3 to 0.5 seconds per lap which is a major impact for a car but team’s technical consultant Pat Symonds has revealed that the team will only feature the unit for the 2013 campaign and not in the current year.
“Yes we will be using KERS next year,” Symonds said. “We plan to adopt the system that has been developed by Williams, which was used by them with the Cosworth engine last year and is currently with their Renault-engine car. Our 2013 unit is a development
of this. We've been very impressed with the engineering, the efficiency and the weight. Williams are also a pleasure to work with both technically and commercially.”
Symonds added that the team needs to improve in all areas. In terms of performance the primary target for the team it to improve in aerodynamics of the car while the progress that the team has made aerodynamically has been positive in the last few months
but there is still some ways to go for the team in the department. A team is only as good as its weakest par and so little by little everything needs to be on together.
The team is aiming for a much improved 2013 campaign and so building a strong foundation is necessary for the team. The mechanical aspect also needs to be looked into of the car and it is hard to not neglect other factors involved but the team has been doing
a good job so far.
He said, “We are also faced with getting KERS working well and understanding all the nuances of that and how to go racing with it. There are therefore many areas where I think we can make substantial improvements through the course of 2013.”
It will be interesting to see how much the team improves for the 2013 after producing several disappointing seasons since its inception into the sport.
