Marussia will not be using KERS in the upcoming 2012 season – Formula 1 news
Principal of Marussia John Booth has announced that the team will not be using Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) in the upcoming 2012 season.
Marussia previously known as Virgin Racing are going to be the only team not using the KERS system for the 2012 season. KERS was brought back into Formula 1 in 2011 and most teams leapt on to the system to get that slight edge to form a faster car.
During the 2011 season, Caterham previously known as Team Lotus and Hispania Racing Team did not take up KERS and suffered poor season performances. For the upcoming 2012 season, though all the teams have taken up the system leaving Marussia as the only
team which has not adapted the system.
Marussia principal John Booth said that the team is looking to focus more on the fundamental aspects of the game. The need for hour is not to gain two or three tenths of a second per lap rather it is to make a strong base that the team can work on in the
coming years to form a strong and reliable car.
“With the strides we are looking to make from this year, our focus has to be on aerodynamics first and foremost - as this will yield the greater gains,” Booth told Autosport. “We are looking for seconds rather than tenths.”
“Our wider view of KERS is that whilst we are supportive of the concept of regenerative braking as an environmental initiative, the current technology is incredibly expensive. It would represent a significant proportion of our operating cost, which is not
in keeping with our original manifesto as a low-cost F1 team in an era of resource restriction,” he added.
Marussia along with all the teams excluding Mercedes are going to be participating at the first pre-season staring from February 7, 2012 at Jerez.
It will give an indication of where all the teams stand in terms of pace and reliability relative to each other. Although some teams might be hiding their pace as Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso stated that Ferrari will hide some pace at the pre-season testing,
still it will shed some light over the true contenders for the 2012 title.
