Marvel of the Leger turned out to be John Gosden trained Masked Marvel
Winning just the Leger is not what Masked Marvel achieved in the final races rather he has added to the fate of his connections too. His trainer, John Gosden, got awarded by third in five years yesterday which was not the only magnificent part, as along
with it, the rider, William Buick, got his second in a row.
Moreover, as if luck could not have blessed the winning lot any more, the colt recorded a course record time as he went forth with three lengths clear of Brown Panther through the final two furlongs.
It was not as effortless as it might seem to be due to the number of good three lengths, Brown Panther won by.
Just behind Masked Marvel, Brown Panther rushed to the wire with Kieren Fallon on mount and trained by Tom Dascombe.
His early fathoming speed led to weakening performance towards the long home straight. It gave the rest a chance to close in further and others maintained strongly in the meanwhile.
Just towards the closing stages of the race, Masked Marvel cashed a turn of foot which entered him into a different league altogether, a Classic winner.
Sea Moon, ridden by Olivier Peslier, and trained by the famous Sir Michael Stoute, finished third in the race.
It might have counted to be a disappointment for the Town Moor fans but the event itself was nothing less than exhilarating.
Masked Marvel’s finishing kick was so unusually powerful that William Buick really seemed to have been putting an effort to pull the colt up after the crossing.
The Leger which is a mile and three quarter contest is the longest and the oldest Classic, yesterday’s being the 235th edition which is now being recognised as the toughest in years.
Masked Marvel’s victory and performance at the Leger was not a coincidence or luck, it actually was the fruit of very long term effort and hard work put in.
"From the day I saw him as a yearling I thought he was a Leger type," said Gosden of the son of Montjeu. "He was a powerful little guy even then and he's got a great pedigree for the job. He's got the pace to drop back in trip, too. He's a proper horse”.
The victory would remain a headline for a while now and would present the colt, along with his connections, lucrative opportunities in future.
