Marvelous Marvin believes Flintoff should have done boxing before cricket – Boxing News
Former Undisputed World Champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler has warned Andrew Flintoff against the danger of boxing. Andrew Flintoff, former English cricket captain and the Hero of 2005 Ashes, will be making his professional boxing debut on November 30 against
Richard Dawson of the United States. While Flintoff feels he has everything to hit the mark in boxing, many others doubt it, including but not limited to Marvelous Marvin.
“You should do boxing first and then cricket. At least you're not getting punched around anymore. I just say good luck to him and keep your head down and your hands up,” said Hager in an interview with BBC Sports.
Flintoff, who is scheduled to make his debut on November 30 in Manchester, retired from cricket in 2010 due to the several injuries he suffered during his professional career. Among all, Flintoff’s most severe injury was to the knee that forced him to retire.
“Changing from being a fighter to being an actor is a lot different from changing to being a fighter from a being a cricket player,” Marvin added.
“But a lot of people have other dreams and want to give being a fighter a shot. I've seen this happen with actors before - and fighters wanting to be actors. That's the way the world is and everybody has to do what they want in life.”
Marvin retired from the ring in 1988, switching to an acting career. According to the former middleweight fighter, switching from being a fighter to being an actor is a lot different than switching from being a cricketer to being a fighter.
Not just Marvin, a lot of other members of the boxing fraternity believe Flintoff is making a blunder by entering the world of boxing. Some believe it is a TV stunt while some believe Flintoff will not be able to hold it.
However, the former English cricketer is hopeful that he will shine as the victor in his debut bout against Richard Dawson. If ‘Freddie’ wins, he will be able to get bigger and better fights in the future. If he loses, probably he would leave the world of
boxing as a failed attempt.
