Marvin Lin topples Nicholas Robert to advance into second round of US Open GP Gold 2012
Men’s Singles shuttler Marvin Lin earned a spot in the second round of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG after toppling Nicholas Robert Henson Waller in the opening match on July 2, 2012.
Both compatriot shuttlers remained head-to-head for 33 minutes and their tussle was concluded with 16-21, 21-12 and 21-13.
Now Marvin Lin will be up against Edwin Ekiring of Uganda in second round and a win will take him into the pre quarter-finals of this Grand Prix Gold tournament.
Earlier in his opening match, he came back from a horrendous start and locked the honour by making a comeback in last the two segments of the show.
On the other hand, Nicholas Robert squandered a golden opportunity of a straight-set win and crashed out of the home event.
The first set of the match started with Marvin prevailing in opening rallies but he could not go with the same flow and allowed his opponent to gain a decent lead with 6-3 total.
Nicholas Robert finished first half with a tight margin of 10-11 and started his campaign with great confidence in the second half.
He gathered three valuable points after 13-14 position and when the opposing shuttler tried to narrow the gap he doubled the lead with 19-15 score on the board.
This burden proved too heavy for Marvin and he surrendered after reading a decisive figure of 16-21.
However, he stood tall in the very next game and stopped the match from being a dead contest.
He dominated from very first stroke to the last one and finished this segment of the match with a huge difference of nine points.
In first half, the US shuttler put his compatriot under great pressure by registering 7-1 total in no time. He maintained this advantage until 11-3 before the interval.
After one-minute break, he dictated his competitor all the way to final stage and pocketed a vital match point with 21-12 margin.
The decider turned in to a replay of the second set as Marvin played flawless badminton and sealed a crucial win in splendid manner.
He placed 11-6 total until mid-game break and then wrapped the show with a staggering figure of 21-13.
